What this helps you understand
How EV charging works alongside Grid Rewards, when charging can be limited, and how to plan (or override) your schedule to get the charge you need while still earning Grid Rewards.
Before you start
- The rules depend on your Grid Rewards plan: Flexible or Guaranteed.
- EV charging limits described here apply to Emaldo® Power Core EV charging on Flexible Grid Rewards during scheduled participation hours.
- Emaldo® does not place limits on external EV chargers.
- Your inverter size affects how much power can be used at once for EV charging, home use, and Grid Rewards participation.
How EV charging works with Grid Rewards
Flexible Grid Rewards
While your system is scheduled to participate in grid balancing, EV charging speed is limited to 4.14 kW (Power Core EV charging). This helps keep battery capacity available if an activation occurs.
If you need a fast charge, you can temporarily stop participating in Grid Rewards in the Emaldo® App. This unlocks full battery power for charging.
Payout impact: You will not earn rewards during the hours you opt out.
Guaranteed Grid Rewards
There is no charging speed limitation during normal operation. During actual grid balancing activations, EV charging can be briefly paused. Activations typically last only a couple of minutes per day.
Does this apply if I’m an existing Grid Rewards system-user?
Yes. The EV charging limit applies to system-users earning Flexible Grid Rewards, including system-users who signed a Grid Rewards contract before the new Grid Rewards schemes launched.
Get the charge you need and still earn rewards
Plan your participation schedule around your charging needs
If you need full charging power at a specific time (for example early morning), adjust your Grid Rewards participation schedule so it doesn’t overlap with your EV charging schedule.
- Create a short opt-out window to unlock full charging power (for example 03:00–05:00).
- Keep opt-out windows as short as possible to maximize earning hours.
Payout impact: You won’t earn Grid Rewards during the hours you choose not to participate.
Emergency fast charging
If you need a quicker charge unexpectedly, temporarily opt out in the Emaldo® App. Your change can take effect from the next hour, depending on your schedule setup.
Payout impact: You won’t earn Grid Rewards during the hours you opt out.
Flexible Grid Rewards: EV charging limits
Power Core EV charging during scheduled participation
- Charging is limited to 4.14 kW when grid balancing participation is scheduled.
- If power is split across three phases, single-phase charging can be limited (for example to 1.4 kW).
- This does not apply to external EV chargers.
Why Emaldo® applies a limit on Flexible Grid Rewards
When Emaldo® bids battery capacity into grid balancing services, Emaldo® commits to providing that capacity. Limiting EV charging power during scheduled participation helps ensure battery capacity is available when needed, so participation (and rewards) can continue.
What you’ll see next
- Flexible Grid Rewards: EV charging may be limited during scheduled participation hours unless you set an opt-out window.
- Guaranteed Grid Rewards: Charging normally runs at full speed, but may briefly pause during activation events.
