We understand that electric vehicle charging is a priority for customers.
This hints and tips article is to help customers with an Emaldo Power Core on the Flexible Grid Rewards manage their EV charging schedule while benefiting from Flexible Grid Rewards. Emaldo does not place any limits on external EV chargers.
How do I make sure my car is fully charged in the morning?
EV charging limits for the Power Core only apply during balancing participation hours and only on the Flexible Grid Rewards scheme
You can adjust when you participate to ensure you can get a full charge. For example – you could choose not to participate in Grid Rewards between 3 and 5 in the morning. This would unlock the full battery to charge your EV
We recommend setting a schedule in advance which works best for your needs: balancing charging your car while maximising your earnings
Remember – you won’t be earning Grid Rewards when you schedule your system not to participate
What if I need to charge my car quickly, in an emergency?
You can change your participation hours, with changes taking affect from the next hour of necessary
So, you can opt out of participating and access the full battery power for a quicker charge, if something unexpected has come up
Is there a way to earn Grid Rewards without limitation on EV charging?
The Guaranteed scheme works slightly differently, as Emaldo has more direct control over the battery participation strategy, meaning we can plan our commitments to the grid operator more accurately, so we don’t need to limit EV charging.
There is no limitation on EV charging, even during balancing reservation
The only restriction is that EV charging is not permitted during activation – when your system is actively providing grid balancing
This is usually only a couple of minutes per day based on our experience
What are the limits to Power Core’s EV Charging capability?
These limits only apply when signing up to Emaldo’s Flexible Grid Rewards scheme:
EV charging is limited to 4.14 kW when grid balancing participation is scheduled
This limit applies regardless of whether the system is in reserve or activated
This is split over three phases, so single phase charging is limited to 1.4kW
Why do you apply these limits?
When Emaldo bids to offer your battery for grid balancing services (see FAQ’s for how this works), we commit to providing that capacity
To ensure that we can meet this obligation, we are limiting how much power can be drawn from the battery for EV charging only when participation is scheduled
If we did not do this, we would not be able access all the grid balancing markets and provide you with flexible Grid Rewards
